I have a cat who likes to stand up while he’s urinating. This means a large portion of the urine goes over the edge of the litterbox and onto the side of the litter box, the wall, the floor. Basically, anywhere but in the litter pan.
I tried several different types of litterboxes – hooded, high sided, automatic, but he managed to make a mess with all. I spent a few hundred dollars until I found the solution, Rubbermaid-type storage tubs! They cost from $10 to $15 depending on the size and if they were on sale (cheaper than large commercial litterboxes). They were tall enough to prevent spillage over the sides. And, they are large enough for the average cat (since most cats prefer a box that is at least 1 ½ times their length).
Recently, I upgraded by purchasing clear totes (this allows the cats to see if anyone is plotting a sneak attack) and cutting openings in the side (so they don’t have to jump in and out). I even used decorative duct tape to cover the cut edges and give the potty boxes an artistic flare. Here is one of my masterpieces. I have since added a small rug on top of the lid to help catch litter.
